- Fans have called for a matchup between these fighters for years.
- New reports indicate Woodley vs. Covington is taking place in either September or October.
For a time, Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley was considered the best welterweight fighter in MMA. He’s now coming off two losses, and many fans are calling for him to take on former training partner Colby Covington. Based on new reports, it seems likely that we’ll see Woodley vs. Covington sometime this fall.
Tyron and Colby have been feuding for years. Some feel this is one of the biggest UFC fights possible at 170 pounds. Now is the perfect time to look at how this bout might play out.
Let’s get into it!
Tyron Woodley is Now in Serious Need of a UFC Victory
The UFC’s welterweight division has always been stacked. For many years, George St. Pierre ruled the weight class with an iron first, dominating each challenger that came his way. Since GSP’s retirement, the belt has changed hands several times.
In July of 2016, Tyron Woodley proved most UFC betting experts wrong by knocking out Robbie Lawler in the first round to capture the welterweight championship of the world. Woodley was one of the most athletic fighters in the promotion and many felt he’d become the next dominant champion. For a time, that prediction turned out to be correct.
Woodley fought and defended his belt four times. That included an incredible performance against Darren Till. In March of 2019, Woodley was booked against Kamaru Usman and entered the fight as the favorite according to almost all MMA betting sites.
Usman beat Woodley from start to finish en route to becoming the new champion. It was more than a year before Tyron fought again. This past May, the former champ was scheduled to take on Gilbert Burns in a number-one contender fight.
Once again, Woodley lost to his opponent and didn’t offer much resistance. Some have now written him off as a title challenger. The UFC seems to disagree and is now looking to book “The Chosen One” into a big fight against an old rival.
When will we see Woodley back in the cage?
UFC is Likely to Announce Woodley vs. Covington Soon
Between 2016 and 2018, Tyron Woodley was seen as one of the best fighters in the UFC. During his run as champion, Tyron continued to receive callouts from his former training partner, Colby Covington. Even after losing the belt, Colby has pushed for a fight against Tyron.
For reasons unknown, this bout has never come together. Some blame contract negotiations. Others think the UFC was unwilling to match two of its most popular welterweights against each other without a belt on the line.
Interestingly, this fight now seems close to coming together. Tyron Woodley recently spoke to former fighter Mike Swick on his podcast. He claims this fight is likely to take place sometime this fall.
“Looks like I’m going to be fighting Colby Covington,” Woodley said. “The date, we’re waiting on right now. I’m pretty confident it’s going to be a main event. Main event ESPN+ me versus Colby. We’re getting real close on a date. September/October. It’s going down for sure.”
It’s exciting news for fans. Many believe that the winner of Woodley vs. Covington could be close to a title shot. That’s particularly true for Colby, who gave Kamaru Usman everything he could handle back in December of 2019.
There’s some real heat heading into this matchup. We’re likely to hear the UFC formally announce the bout over the next week or two. Stay tuned for more updates on the situation!

Tyron Woodley is currently listed as the +235 underdog. His run as champion is over, and many now feel that he’s reached the end of his career as a mixed martial artist. Woodley has incredible power, though, and can end this fight at any moment.
Colby Covington has become one of the most disliked fighters in MMA. Even his biggest detractors can’t take away from his skill. “Chaos” has elite wrestling and a solid enough kickboxing game to give opponents trouble. BetOnline lists him as the -275 favorite in this one.
