  • Japan plans to begin the 2021 Summer Olympic Games on July 23rd.
  • New Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga supports holding the event.
  • Adam Silver is now expressing doubt that we’ll see the top NBA stars at the Olympics next year.

The 2021 Summer Olympics are still scheduled to take place in Japan next year. Many countries are expressing doubt that this can be done in a way that’s safe for everyone involved. This week, NBA commissioner Adam Silver revealed that we probably won’t see the top NBA stars at the Olympics next year.

It’s not entirely surprising to hear. There are many questions surrounding this event. Some feel it should still be canceled entirely. Today, we’re going to talk about how the NBA may approach the Games next year.

Here’s what we know about this situation.

Japan’s New Prime Minister Supports 2021 Olympic Plans

Leaders in Japan have been gearing up to host the 2020 Olympic Games for years. At the start of 2020, however, many of the government officials here began expressing doubt that this event could be held. Finally, in March, these officials and members of the IOC announced that the Olympics were being postponed by a year.

The current plan is to host the Games in the summer of 2021. Many residents in the country feel it’s no longer worth the trouble of hosting the Olympics next year. A huge number of business owners here also called for its cancelation.

Not long ago, Shinzo Abe announced his resignation as Prime Minister. News then came out that Yoshihide Suga was taking over as the country’s PM. Reports surfaced that Suga supports Japan’s plans to host the 2021 Summer Olympic Games.

This approval was key for event supporters. With the Prime Minister onboard, it seems highly likely that next year’s Olympic Games will be held. The Games will, of course, only be able to take place if things around the world have improved.

Under normal circumstances, some of the best athletes from around the world take part in the Summer Olympic Games. Things may be slightly different in 2021. Some major US sports leagues are already expressing their concern sending over players to compete.

It now appears that some of the best basketball players in the world could choose to avoid the Olympics in Japan.

Adam Silver Expresses Doubt That We’ll See NBA Stars at the Olympics in 2021

The Summer Olympics have always been a showcase for the NBA. In the past, the US league would send its top American players to compete against other players from around the world. It’s no secret that the US dominates Olympic basketball every year.

Things may look slightly different in 2021, though. There are serious concerns about how safe things will be at the Olympics next year. It’s likely that many of the NBA’s biggest stars will choose to avoid the event entirely.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes this will be the case.

“There are a lot of great U.S. players, and we may be up against a scenario where the top 15 NBA players aren’t competing in the Olympics, but other great American players are competing,” Silver said. “Obviously, there are many NBA players who participate in the Olympics from other countries. That’s something we’re going to have to work through. I just say, lastly, these are highly unique and unusual circumstances. I think, just as it is for the Olympic movement, it is for us as well. We’re just going to have to sort of find a way to meld and mesh those two competing considerations.”

It will be very interesting to see how the Olympics come together next year. Japan is continuing to prepare for the event. Things will need to look much different, however, if this global sporting competition can possibly take place.

For now, the NBA seems determined to simply get through its current season. It’s been one of the most unusual ones in history. Many fans are now flocking to different online sportsbooks to bet on how the rest of the season will unfold.

NBA Betting Options Are Still Available Online

Back in March, every major US sports league was forced to shut down its operations. Some were in the middle of their seasons and immediately stopped. It took months for any of the country’s sports leagues to start operating again.

The NBA resumed its season on July 30th. Games are now played without fans in attendance. It’s been a hugely unusual experience for both fans and the players involved. Many are simply happy to see games being played.

Bovada is offering some incredible odds for the entire season. That includes odds for each and every game. Some fans are now choosing to bet on which team manages to win the championship this year.

As of now, the Los Angeles Lakers are listed as the betting favorites with odds of -325 to get the win. Miami Heat come in next with odds of +550. The Boston Celtics are third with odds of +675. The Denver Nuggets are listed as the biggest underdogs to win the championship with odds of +1600.

The NBA is filled with talented players. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that we’ll see the top NBA stars at the Olympics next year. We will continue to offer updates on the Olympic Games as the months go on.
