We May See UFC Events in Las Vegas Before the End of the Month
- The UFC is set to host its next fight card on May 30th.
- A location for this event has not been officially announced.
- The Nevada State Athletic Commission is meeting to talk about allowing UFC events in Las Vegas.
On May 9th, the UFC became the first major sports league to resume its normal operations. The promotion isn’t slowing down and plans to host several more events over the next few weeks. This week, members of the Nevada State Athletic Commission will meet to discuss whether or not to allow UFC events in Las Vegas once again.
Las Vegas is the home of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In fact, the UFC has its own arena that’s made for hosting combat sporting events here. Today, we’re going to look at when fights might start being held back in the fight capital of the world.
Let’s get into it!
The UFC is Set to Hold More Events Over the Next Few Weeks
The past few months have been extremely difficult for sports leagues around the United States. Nearly all of them have been forced to completely halt their seasons. Even the 2020 Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Japan, were canceled.
Not long after leagues began shutting down, Dana White began claiming that the UFC would be the first league to get back on track. White, the UFC President, eventually made this a reality. The MMA leader held a PPV event on May 9th and has since put on two more shows.
This company isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Officials have revealed that several more shows will be held over the next few months. That includes events on the “Fight Island,” the private island that the UFC booked to host international fight cards.
The next event is scheduled to be held on May 30th. According to several reports, this card will be headlined by a welterweight bout between Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns. It’s still unclear where exactly this fight card will be held.
If the UFC has its way, this event will take place inside the Apex Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Before that can happen, however, this company needs to gain approval from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. This government body is now officially scheduled to discuss this matter next week.
NV Commission is Scheduled to Discuss Allowing UFC Events in Las Vegas
Many consider Las Vegas to be the fight capital of the world. Over the past few decades, this city has hosted some of the biggest fight cards of all time. The UFC is known for putting on its biggest and best events here in this city.
Unsurprisingly, MMA’s biggest promotion is hungry to start hosting events back in its hometown. That’s easier said than done, though. Nevada has prohibited any sporting events to take place and has still not given the green light for the UFC to resume its operations.
That may soon change. On May 27th, this commission will meet to talk about whether or not to allow UFC events in Las Vegas once again. The UFC has already submitted its safety plan to this group. That includes details on how the promotion will protect its staff and fighters.
Many feel that the Nevada Commission will approve these plans. This state is already beginning to open back up. The state’s casinos are preparing to reopen sometime in June.
Unfortunately, these events will not be allowed to take place with fans in attendance. In fact, Dana White doesn’t expect fans to attend fights anytime soon.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission also plans to discuss whether or not to allow boxing matches to take place in Las Vegas. We’ll be sure to report on the results of this meeting after it takes place.
Odds On the Next UFC Events Are Now Being Offered Online
According to several reports, the UFC’s recent shows were the most-watched in MMA history. It’s likely that a huge number of sports fans were exposed to MMA for the first time. Obviously, the UFC wants to capitalize on being the only show in town and is gearing up to host its next event later this month.
The full lineup for the card on May 30th has not been released. In fact, no one even knows where it will take place. If UFC events in Las Vegas are allowed, this card will be held at the Apex Center. Florida and Arizona are two other options currently being discussed.
Odds for this fight card are just now being released by Bovada, one of the top online sportsbooks in the US. Some are surprised to see where they stand.
The main event of this card is expected to be Woodley vs. Burns. At the moment, Tyron Woodley is listed as the -175 favorite. Gilbert Burns comes into this proposed bout with current odds of +145 to win.
Only four fights have been confirmed to take place on this card. Some are unsure of whether it will take place, at all. Stay tuned for updates.
