It’s a special month for the sport of MMA. Many of the top international fighters now have a chance to compete. Now is the perfect time to look at some of the newest fights booked to take place at the UFC’s new island venue.
Let’s get into it!
The UFC Continues to Book Future Events
We’ve been covering the UFC’s return for weeks now. The top MMA promotion in the world held its first show on May 9th. It continues to host events ever since and has now been booking major PPV events for the future.
In recent weeks, the UFC has started to announce major fight cards. Obviously, four major fight cards are scheduled to take place on “Fight Island.” Tomorrow night, the first event here takes place headlined by Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal.
Four days later, the UFC will host another show between Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige. A few days after that, a Fight Island card between Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez. To wrap things up, the promotion will put on a card between Darren Till and Robert Whittaker.
After July, the UFC heads back to the US. Not long ago, the promotion announced that it’s putting on the trilogy fight between Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic on August 15th. Some believe this is the biggest heavyweight title fight in history.
More fight cards will be revealed soon. In fact, news is surfacing that the UFC plans to put on two PPV events in October of this year. Some speculate that Khabib Nurmagomedov will be competing on one of these cards.
This is shaping up to be an exciting summer for MMA fans.
UFC Reveals Several New Fight Island Bouts
Putting on international fight cards on an island in Abu Dhabi hasn’t been easy. The UFC has been implementing some extremely strict testing measures to ensure that everyone comes into fight night healthy. Unsurprisingly, some individuals involved with this event have been removed due to illness.
As a result, the UFC has been forced to book replacement bouts. This week, the promotion revealed several new Fight Island bouts. Some may even be more exciting than the initial fights.
Firstly, exciting Swedish middleweight Khamzat Chimaev will take on John Philipps on the promotion’s July 15th card. This isn’t the only July 15th fight that’s been changed. A light-heavyweight bout between Jorge Gonzalez and Kenneth Bergh is also slated to take place on this event.
A few days later on July 18th, the UFC has booked a new flyweight bout between Tagir Ulanbekov and Oleksandr Doskalchuk will be taking place. Both are considered exciting prospects in the division. It should be a great fight for the 125-pound division.
The last addition to the UFC’s list of new Fight Island bouts takes place between Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ramazan Emeev on July 25th. It’s a great heavyweight bout that will most likely end before the final bell.
Each of the fight cards taking place on Yas Island will be exciting. Of course, all eyes are on the major event taking place here tomorrow night.
All Main Card Fighters Make Weight for UFC 251
Each of the ten fighters slated to compete on the main card of UFC 251 has officially made weight. That means three titles will be on the line! Many believe this is the best card the UFC has put together so far in 2020.
Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman have both weighed-in at 170 pounds. This is going to be a war, yet Usman enters this bout as the significant betting favorite. Masvidal is extremely explosive, though, and might be worth a bet.
Dana White recently spoke to the media about this event. He claims it’s trending as one of the biggest fight cards ever.
“This is trending off the charts,” White said. “This thing is trending higher than a Conor McGregor fight. The only that this fight is comparable to is Conor vs. Khabib. I’ll give you an interesting stat: Our UFC store has sold more merchandise already now than we did in all of 2019. We already beat 2019 with merchandise. This thing is trending as big of a fight as I’ve ever seen in my entire career.”
With the new Fight Island bouts recently added this week, it’s likely that each of the cards taking place in July will be huge. None will be as big as the event tomorrow night, though. We’ll be sure to report on the PPV figures once they begin to come out.
