Marvin Vettori Calls Out Paulo Costa After UFC 263 Loss

  • Marvin Vettori wants to fight Paulo Costa next.
  • Vettori is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Israel Adesanya at UFC 263 last Saturday night.
  • Costa recently turned down an August 21 fight with Jared Cannonier due to a complaint in his fighter pay.

Marvin Vettori had just lost to Israel Adesanya in his first attempt to win a UFC world title. But the Italian Dream is already plotting his next move.

During a post fight interview, UK reporter Caroline Pearce asked Vettori who he woud like to fight next. Pearce even volunteered Darren Till, who was supposed to fight Vettori last April but could not make the fight due to injury. Vettori said he was game with fighting Till, if he could make it to the fight.

However, the Italian Dream specifically mentioned his preferred opponent:

With Adesanya calling out no.1 ranked Robert Whitker on Saturday night, beating the number 2 ranked Costa would hasten his return to the top of the rankings. The Brazilian has no fight lined up after he turned down a fight with Jared Cannonier due to fight pay.

Looking for Main Event Money

Fighting the no. 2 ranked Costa would be a good move for Vettori but with Borrachinha’s current situation with the UFC doesn’t look good and it appears that he may not be fighting anytime soon, or anytime at all.

Costa was supposed to fight Jared Cannonier at the headliner of the UFC’s August 21 event. However, Costa pulled out of that fight after his request to be paid “main event money” was denied by the UFC. The Brazilian went on to compare UFC fighter pay with what YouTube starts Jake and Logan Paul make.

UFC President Dana White took exception of Costa’s comments, suggesting that he should’ve started a YouTube page at the age of 13, referencing to the Pauls, if he wanted to earn better. The UFC boss went on to seriously say that if that’s how Costa feels, then he should fight out his contract, leave, and do what he wants to do, which is obviously saying that he doesn’t want the Brazilian in the UFC anymore.

New Middleweight Champion….In His Head

Props to Vettori for giving it his all at UFC 263 but to say to Adesanya after the bout that he thought he won the bout was way over his head. Adesanya dominated him from start to finish, out striking the Italian on the feet, and not allowing Vettori to keep him on the ground after getting taken down.

With Vettori unable to launch any consistent offense, Adesanya picked him apart with his pin-point striking. The Last Stylebender also used leg kicks to slow down the advancing Italian. In the end, Adesanya won via shutout and Vettori said after the bout that he didn’t agree with the 50-45 scorecards.

It must have been disappointing for Marvin Vettori to have come up short on Saturday night. He had the notion that because Adesanya barely beat him in their first bout, he could keep the fight close again. Vettori came to UFC 263 with the mindset that he was leaving as the first Italian champion in the UFC. Of course that didn’t happen, as Adesanya was clearly the better and smarter fighter between them.
