Here’s What We Know About Cody Garbrandt Moving to Flyweight
- Rumors of Cody Garbrandt moving to flyweight have been circulating for weeks.
- Dana White is hinting that Garbrandt may receive the next title shot against Deiveson Figueiredo.
- Fans are now asking who will compete against Petr Yan for the bantamweight title.
Earlier this month, Joseph Benavidez and Deiveson Figueiredo fought for the UFC’s vacant flyweight championship of the world. It took less than one round for Figueiredo to finish Joe and many now feel he’ll become the next dominant champion in the sport. Recently, rumors of Cody Garbrandt moving to flyweight to challenge Deiveson have begun to surface.
It’s exciting, albeit slightly unusual news. Many felt that Garbrandt was one of the bigger men in the bantamweight division. Now is the perfect time to look at how the former champion might fare down at 125 pounds.
Let’s get into it!
The UFC Has an Exciting New Champion to Keep an Eye on
There are hundreds of fighters on the UFC roster. In every single weight class, there are talented young mixed martial artists that are capable of becoming champions. Every once in awhile, one of these fighters put on a performance that truly stands out.
That’s what we saw on July 19th. Deiveson Figueiredo put on one of the most incredible title performances in the history of the UFC. He defeated Joseph Benavidez in a way that no one else has been able to do. After rocking Joe several times on the feet, he secured the rear-naked choke and put the longtime contender to sleep.
Everyone was surprised to see how dominant this performance was. Many, including UFC President Dana White, began wondering how the new champion might do in other weight divisions. Some UFC betting fans are already calling for him to fight against the new bantamweight champion, Petr Yan.
For now, Figueiredo will likely remain in the flyweight division. There was a time when the UFC seemed close to getting rid of this weight class. With Figueiredo now as champion, it seems likely that the promotion will put a hold to these plans.
Several fighters at 125 pounds seem capable of challenging Figueiredo for the title. An official opponent for the new champion has not yet been named. Rumors are starting to surface that former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt might be given the shot.
Is this an actual possibility?
Dana White Hints at Cody Garbrandt Moving to Flyweight
Nowadays, there are several fighters below 155 pounds with big names. This goes to show how popular the sport of mixed martial arts has grown. Perhaps the most well-known fighter in the lower weight classes is Cody Garbrandt.
Cody burst onto the UFC scene back in January of 2015. His talent immediately became clear, as he racked up six-straight wins in the promotion. In December of 2016, he won the bantamweight title against Dominick Cruz.
Many felt that Garbrandt would rule the division for years. Surprisingly, he suffered three-straight losses between 2017 and 2019. Finally, this past June, he earned his first win in years by knocking out Raphael Assuncao in the second round.
It seemed likely that Garbradnt would push for another title shot at bantamweight. Interestingly, he now seems more focused on challenging Figueiredo for the flyweight belt. He confirmed this in a recent media interview.
“We’re trying to wait on [a contract to fight Figueiredo] with [Ali Abdelaziz] and Dana and [Sean Shelby] and [Mick Maynard],” Cody said. “I’ve actually been vocal about going to 125 for quite some time now. We spoke about it in the past before the Assuncao fight and I feel like it’s great. I’m able to do it now, early still in my career. I just turned 29. I’m able to go to 125, challenge and win that title there, and then go back up to 135 pounds and compete with the best of them there.”
As we already mentioned, Dana White seems interested in this bout, as well. Cody Garbrandt moving to Flyweight would be a huge move for his career. It’s clear he has some options ahead of him.
Who Will Challenge Petr Yan For the Bantamweight Title Next?
The UFC always keeps its cards close to the chest. Company officials enjoy waiting to announce big fights. Petr Yan won the bantamweight title just a few weeks ago, yet many fans are already asking who he’ll fight next.
Some felt that Cody Garbrandt would get the shot. Despite being just 1-3 in his past four bouts, he’s one of the biggest stars in the UFC. From a stylistic matchup, this would be a very intriguing fight.
There’s no doubt that Aljamain Sterling is most deserving of a title shot. The New York-based bantamweight has won five fights in a row, including an incredible first-round submission over Cory Sandhagen at UFC 250. Most agree he should get the next crack at Yan’s belt. Some still feel Marlon Moraes will get the shot, yet he recently tested positive for Covid-19.
The UFC has yet to announce Yan’s next opponent. He didn’t take much damage in the recent fight with Jose Aldo. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him back in the cage within a few months.
With Cody Garbrandt moving to flyweight, Aljamain Sterling seems likely to get the title shot next. Perhaps we’ll see Cody move back to bantamweight with a win over Figueiredo. Make sure to stay tuned for updates!
