by Joe Rodriguez
No. 24 Marquette Golden Eagles looks to break out of a recent skid when it returns home Wednesday evening for a Big East showdown with St. John's Red Storm .
The Golden Eagles have lost four of six, including narrow defeats in the last week at then-No. 9 Georgetown (73-70 on Jan. 4) and No. 1 Syracuse (73-66 on Jan. 7). The Red Storm are coming off a buzzer-beating 57-55 triumph at Cincinnati on Saturday.
- St. John's Red Storm @ Marquette Golden Eagles
When: 7:00 PM ET, Wednesday, January 11, 2012
Where: Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
TV: ESPNU, ESPN3 (web).
The Golden Eagles have opened as 13.5-point favorites on SBG Global Sportsbook’s Live NCAA Basketball Odds.
St. John's Red Storm (8-7): The young Red Storm have gotten by despite the lack of any outside production — St. John's hits just 3.9 3-pointers per game and shoots just a paltry 25.5 percent from behind the arc, both easily last in the Big East. Freshman G D'Angelo Harrison leads four players in double figures with 16.0 ppg, while freshman SF Moe Harkless — who scored the game-winner against Cincinnati — adds 15.3 points and leads the team with 8.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks.
Marquette Golden Eagles (12-4): The Golden Eagles are still one of the most potent offensive teams in the Big East despite their recent struggles, ranking second in the conference behind Syracuse in scoring (77.3 ppg) and assists (17.0). The outside-inside combo of SG Darius Johnson-Odom (18.0 ppg) and senior F Jae Crowder (16.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg) head up a balanced offense that features five players averaging at least 8.7 points. Crowder also leads Marquette in blocked shots (14) and steals (31).
1. Marquette leads the all-time series, 13-6, but St. John's took the last meeting, an 80-68 victory last February 15 in New York.
2. Harrison was named the Big East's rookie of the week on Monday after averaging 21 points and 7.5 rebounds in the Red Storm's last two games.
3. The Red Storm rank a distant last in the conference in scoring margin (plus-0.9), while Marquette is third at plus-12.6, trailing only Syracuse and Georgetown.
